Network Functionality - Simple and Easy Connecting your A/V receiver directly to the internet or home PC has never been easier. The TX-NR609 brings to life a wide range of Internet Radio sources such as Pandora, Rhapsody, Napster, Slacker, Sirius Internet Radio, MediaFly, and vTuner with unprecedented power and fidelity. Adding to its tremendous versatility is the TX-NR609's compatibility with Microsoft's Windows7 platform which includes the DLNA "Play To" media-streaming feature. Having your receiver connected to the internet also means you can easily update its firmware. Oh, and did we mention it has a killer on-screen guide? Connect - Sit Back - Enjoy! THX® Select2 Plus™ Certified The TX-NR609 features THX Select2 Plus certification, guaranteeing that it can faithfully reproduce movie content as the filmmaker intended. THX Select2 Plus certification is specified for rooms where the screen to-seat-viewing distance is 10 to 12 feet and the room volume is around 2000 cubic feet. To achieve THX Select2 Plus certification, the TX-NR609 must meet the world's most demanding standards for home theater audio quality and performance, and must play at reference volume levels with minimal distortion. 4K Support Via Marvell Qdeo® The TX-NR609 offers full 4K (3840 x 2160) upscaling of standard video sources such as 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i/p. Interlaced-to-progressive conversion and scaling are performed by a high-quality Marvell Qdeo® video-processing chip. Qdeo® is a versatile video processor that uses algorithms designed to erase video noise and artifacts such as jaggies and feathering. Played back on a compatible widescreen display, your Blu-ray Discs and DVDs will look more detailed and cinematic than ever. Direct Digital Connection of iPod®/iPhone® via Front-Panel USB Port The TX-NR609's front-panel USB port lets audio files stored on your iPod®/iPhone® or USB flash drive. The convenient on screen display lets you see exactly what is playing. As the audio signals are transported in digital form, rather than analog, there is much less chance for signal degradation. The TX-NR609 also incorporates Onkyo's exclusive Advanced Music Optimizer to compensate for lost bit information and improve the quality of compressed audio signals. End result: your music sounds cleaner and more faithful to the original. A Suite of Audyssey Technologies for the Ideal Listening Environment (1) Audyssey 2EQ® tailors multi-channel audio for your home theater speaker set-up by measuring three room positions and applying a resolution filter to the satellite speakers to correct for room acoustics. (2) Audyssey Dynamic EQ® maintains a consistent bass response, tonal balance, and surround-sound effect at different volume levels, so you can enjoy the natural dynamics of your content regardless of the volume. (3) Audyssey Dynamic Volume® automatically compensates for volume fluctuations in different audio content (for example, during commercial breaks) while optimizing the dynamic range. Audyssey DSX™ and Dolby® Pro Logic® IIz Add New Dimensions to Surround Sound The TX-NR609 handles two advanced surround-sound technologies from Audyssey and Dolby that offer exciting new ways to set up the speakers in your home theater system. Audyssey DSX lets you incorporate "front wide" speakers, in place of the usual surround back speakers, to expand the width of the soundstage. Set up at a recommended 6° off center, these channels help to produce a more realistic soundstage and a more immersive listening experience. Alternatively, Audyssey DSX can reconfigure the TX-NR609's surround back channels to deliver "front height" channels. These channels carry ambient, non-directional audio that adds a new vertical dimension to your movies and games. Dolby Pro Logic IIz provides a similar front-height speaker option that likewise works to create a more enveloping home theater experience. HDMI® Support for 3D Video and Audio Return Channel The HDMI® implementation on this receiver supports both 3D video and an Audio Return Channel. 3D video brings exciting possibilities to home entertainment, with movie, game, and broadcast content on the increase and 3D-compatible TVs coming to market. The TX-NR609 also offers the convenience of an Audio Return Channel via HDMI. Audio content received directly by your HDTV's tuner can be sent "upstream" to your A/V receiver, without the need for a separate S/PDIF audio cable. Convenient Overlay On-Screen Display via HDMI® Changing your A/V receiver's settings is now more seamless than ever, thanks to the TX-SR609's overlay On-Screen Display (OSD) feature. With a simple press of the home button, the on-screen set-up menus appear overlaid on the video image you're watching. This means you can adjust the settings immediately, without having to switch back and forth from a blank screen background. PC Input Use PC-IN to easily connect your notebook or mediacenter PC to your Onkyo AV receiver, allowing you to watch your stored movies on your flatscreen TV. You can now easily watch internet videos, PC-stored movies and pictures on your TV. (Audio connectivity may vary depending on your computer hardware, but Onkyo receivers support a wide range of different interfaces.) The best feedback from customers 131 of 132 people found the following review helpful. Large Mid-receiver with more than most of snakeye142 I upgraded from an old Yamaha HTR not HDMI 5850th I looked at the following: - Onkyo TX-SR608 - Denon AVR-1911 - Pioneer VSX-1020-S - PIONEER VSX-1021-K - Yamaha RX-V667 - A few others - Onkyo HT-RC360 is also a lot like that deserves comparison , esp. with the price. First impression: - Box was well packed. - Easy to connect to the right of the box. I have a simple 5.1 installed, but 7.2 seems pretty easy. Plenty of space between things, except the power seems to be in a place a bit uncomfortable, but definitely not a game changer or something to lose more than 5 minutes to think. - Plenty of ports (more on that later). - Very nice and especially intuitive GUI OSD. I am one of those guys who have not read the manual if I do not need, and the only time I had to learn how to program a radio station. - Remote is just ok to use a heavier feel to it and a better explanation of things. I got used to my iPhone or use the remote control (more on that below too). Advantages of this: - 6x HDMI inputs, one front, one output. - Network can. I use Pandora a lot and it integrates nicely, but it has many other features of Internet music. - Nice On Screen Display (OSD) of the GUI (Graphical User Interface). - Support via Marvell Qdeo 4K (3840 x 2160 1920 x 1080 vs, although most TVs do not support this, but still ...). - The iPhone / iPhone app control (give the half, I have more to say about this below). - All standard HDMI 1.4 features (standby HDMI pass-through, 3D, Audio Return Channel). - Powered Zone 2 audio output. - The iPhone / iPod connector out of the box via the standard USB cable to the front (no need for an additional (more money) port, but there is an Onkyo UP-A1 iPod dock). - PC VGA in (but really, most of them have HDMI now anyway). - Optional Onkyo HT1 HD Radio tuner - excellent sound quality. - High quality video conversion. I took an old DVD and set the output to 480i (standard definition) and let you convert the pipe. So comparing the output from my PS3 in 1080, and an old HD DVD player (lol) and a stand-alone DVD player with upconversion and 1080 this receiver just blew him away. (Note:. On top of a 50inch Sony TV) - DLNA (for connecting to a home media system or a PC with music). - THX certification (for the show for me and the cool factor, I could not tell much difference). - Of course it does Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA and all the other standard decoder. - Ability to update firmware via Internet easily. Disadvantages of these: - No built-in HD Radio. - No built-AirPlay (as some Denon and Pioneer VSX-1021-k). - No video output for zone 2 - No PC control. A few things to note: - The iPhone Remote is a bit lacking. He does his basic things you would expect: the control of the station entrance, on / off, change the music on Pandora etc / DLNA / iPod /, but the volume could use some work and the ability to bass / acute and large control buttons instead of the volume is useless. Two things I wish it had: the ability to vote on Pandora or any interaction, and the ability to select the audio level of each speaker to adjust. Fitting is simple and very easy to use. Very nice bonus. - When using the standby on, you can opt for "last used input", "the output of a specific" or "Auto". If you change it, it turns on. The "Auto" option can be weird sometimes switch to something, but after the thing I want out, go back to catch him. - A fan on the top, but have yet to realize that, even in the dead silence of a horror movie, even after the receiver goes for 5-6 hours, followed by a few days in a row. Maybe later. I am very happy with this and would (and have) recommend this as an upgrade purchase 06/20/11: - Added.
